Is my boyfriend Jewish?

His maternal grandmother was a Hungarian Jew who raised my boyfriend's mother as a "Christian" because she was afraid of persecution during the war. My boyfriend's mother married an atheist physicist and my boyfriend is against all religions. However, Jewish people (including a Rabbi) often try to convince him to get back to the faith. They keep telling him he'll always be Jewish. In your opinion, is he.....?
