Heavy period and blood leakage...is it just me that has this problem?

I find that on the first 2 days of my period I have to put a sheet or something on my bed because it is likely by the time I wake up I will have leaked blood onto my bed or duvet. It's embarring and I was just wondering if anyone else has this problem?
