Weird engine sound?

When I start the engine in my 1990 Golf 1272, the engine will not start properly and make a quiet but audible intermittent sound before the engine dies. This is remedied by revving the engine pretty mercilessly until the engine warms up a few miles down the road which I understand is bad for the engine. The engine is fine once it is warm. Is it the carb?
