Who exactly came up with the term shag? Why not some other word?

the word "shag" has many definitions. One is the transitive verb meaning "to chase and bring back." The term was popularized in baseball, where it is common to "shag flies" in the outfield during batting practice. The term "shag" has deep roots in the English language, and was not just coined as an innuendo joke.
